AEC Intern Partnership Program Continues
Such an awesome opportunity for our summer interns! MMC Contractors and Turner Construction Company hosted the fourth rotation of the 2023 A/E/C intern Partnership. This year’s class of interns had the opportunity to tour MMC Contractors’ fabrication lab and learn about new and emerging technologies within the construction industry.

Welcome to the team, Kirby!
BSE Structural Engineers is excited to welcome Kirby Lough to the team as a structural engineer. Kirby graduated in May 2023 from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering with a focus on structures. Before moving to KC and joining BSE, Kirby worked as a CAD tech at a local Oklahoma architectural firm. He is a member of the American Insitute of Steel Construction (AISC) and was involved in the FIRST Robotics Competition program while at school. When not at work, you can find Kirby playing or watching baseball.

Welcome to the team, Shelby!
BSE Structural Engineers is excited to welcome Shelby Arrieta to the team as a structural engineer. Shelby graduated in May 2022 from The University of Kansas with a BS in Architectural Engineering. She has valuable experience in teaching, research and structural engineering. Shelby is a familiar face around BSE, having served as a summer intern in 2021; we are excited to have her on board as a full-time BSE employee. While at KU, Shelby worked at the University of Kansas Structural Testing Facility, assisting graduate students with their research projects. Outside the office, Shelby enjoys trying new recipes, reading and spending time with friends and family.

AEC Intern Partnership program
BSE Structural Engineers and the City of Lenexa team had the honor of hosting the 2nd rotation for the 2023 A/E/C Intern Partnership coordinated by BHC. The morning began at Lenexa’s Thompson Barn, where the interns learned about the various stages of a project, from the initial conception and planning process, through the stages of design and construction, with a showcase on the Lenexa Justice Center project. We discussed the project’s coordination using BIM 3D modeling, as well as project challenges and the state-of-the-art features incorporated into the design and construction of this $73 million project. A tour of the Lenexa Justice Center project followed the day’s session.

MEET OUR SUMMER INTERNS

BSE Structural Engineers is proud to introduce our summer interns for 2023!
George Luetje is a structural engineering intern. George will graduate from Kansas State University in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering, focusing on structural engineering. Last summer, George began his path into the world of the built environment, having worked as a construction manager for a residential building company where he managed the building process of the homes. In his free time, George enjoys playing board games with friends, building with Legos, and outdoor activities such as running, biking or walking.
Makayla Young is a structural engineering intern. Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Makayla will graduate from KU in May 2024 with a BS in Architectural Engineering. While at KU, Makayla is involved with on-campus activities such as the KU marching band and Concrete Canoe Competition. Her previous hands-on engineering experience included working as an electrical engineer intern assisting senior engineers with AutoCAD drawings for high-voltage substations, and developing multiple lightning protection studies for the solar substations. In her free time, she enjoys painting, reading and traveling.
As interns with BSE this summer, George and Makayla will participate in the 2023 AEC Intern Partnership coordinated by BHC, which comprises eight Kansas City area firms and 72 total interns. During this collaborative program, the interns will receive a unique and valuable experience that will better prepare them for their careers in the AEC industry.
We are excited to welcome George and Makayla to the team!
